Sun Advanced Lights Out Manager 1.6 (ALOM)

Sun Advanced Lights Out Manager (ALOM) is the standard System Controller (SC) for remote out-of-band management for many current and future Sun servers. ALOM version 1.6 supports the Sun Fire V125, Sun Fire V210, Sun Fire V215, Sun Fire V240, Sun Fire V245, Sun Fire V250, Sun Fire V440, Sun Fire V445, Netra 210, Netra 240, and Netra 440 servers. ALOM functions allow for monitoring, logging, alerting and for basic control of the system. ALOM is particularly useful for remotely managing a server in a typical "lights out" environment. It is the next generation strategic solution, replacing the functionality of Remote System Control (RSC) used on VSP servers and Lights Out Management (LOM & LOMlite) used on Sun Netra servers.

The ALOM System Controller and ALOM firmware combine the features of RSC and LOM, as well as adding several new features. The ALOM System Controller hardware is embedded in the server. However, ALOM functions completely independently as a separate embedded computer. ALOM firmware is pre-installed by default and is active from the first moment that the system is plugged in.

ALOM 1.6 features include:

  • Serial interface (CLI)
  • 10 Mb Ethernet interface telnet CLI (10/100Base T for V215/V245/V445)
  • Secure Ethernet interface (secure shell CLI)
  • Host side interface/admin utility
  • Host side monitoring (disks, fans, power, temp, PSU, FRUID, LED, hotplug devices)
  • Host control (power, reset)
  • Server watchdog XIR: (OS monitor/restart/XIR)
  • Self watchdog/restart
  • Enhanced events (ALOM events, host events, hotplug devices)
  • Logging events to ALOM (including nvram and syslog)
  • Logging host console stream output
  • Multiple users
  • User configurable delivery of events to ALOM CLI, email, and syslog
  • Out-of-box functionality
  • Optimized boot time
  • Hardware environmental monitoring/management

System Requirements

ALOM comes pre-installed on your server. Servers currently supported by ALOM 1.6 are:

  • A Sun Fire V125 server
  • A Sun Fire V210 server
  • A Sun Fire V215 server
  • A Sun Fire V240 server
  • A Sun Fire V245 server
  • A Sun Fire V250 server
  • A Sun Fire V440 server
  • A Sun Fire V445 server
  • A Netra 210 server
  • A Netra 240 server
  • A Netra 440 server
Please check the README file in the download package for important, more detailed system requirements information.

NOTE: ALOM 1.6 is the most recent and up-to-date version of this product. It has the latest platform support, support for updated system controller hardware and the latest bug fixes. It is the only release that supports all shipping hardware today. All prior versions should not be used on new shipping hardware and are no longer available on the Sun Download Center.

In the Sun Fire V440, V250 and Netra 440 servers that use an ALOM System Controller Card, daughter cards marked with part number 501-6346-06 (or higher, not -01 through -05) absolutely require ALOM release 1.4 or later. Using a prior ALOM version below 1.4 could damage the new ALOM System Controller Card.

The ALOM command-line interface is available on:

  • Systems with telnet client software
  • Systems with secure shell client software
  • ASCII character terminals or
  • Systems running ASCII terminal emulation software attached to the SER_MGT port.

ALOM Software and Documentation

ALOM software is pre-installed on the server and is active at the first power on. Although normally you will not need to download this software, it is provided here as a convenience should you ever have to reinstall the feature or wish to upgrade to a newer version.

The software can be found at the Sun Download Center. Documentation for this release can be found at the Sun Server Documentation site. For assistance with the ALOM software installation, be sure to read the detailed information in the README file contained in the software download.
