The Solaris 9 operating system launched in May 2002. Subsequently, Sun launched the Solaris 10 operating system in January 2005, with its latest release being Solaris 10 5/08.

On April 15 2008, Sun communicated the pre-notification of the upcoming Solaris 9 operating system End of Life transition to customers and partners. Per the Solaris operating system life cycle model, the End Of Life announce for Solaris 9 is now targeted to occur in the second calendar quarter of 2009. Other life cycle events (Last Order Date, Last Ship Date, End of Retirement Phase 1 and End of Service Life) will subsequently occur at the intervals defined in the life cycle model following the actual end of life announce date.

Sun encourages all customers to upgrade to the Solaris 10 operating system and get the benefits of the latest systems and the innovations in Solaris 10. With Solaris 9 Containers software, existing Solaris 9 applications can be moved to Containers on Solaris 10 and immediately benefit from the innovations in the latest systems and in Solaris 10.

Please see the FAQs for additional information on the transition plan.
