Sun technology helps drive the ONE Campaign, joining forces with Bono to fight AIDS and poverty.
Active Tab Overview

02 May 2005 -- In a twenty-first century blend of activism and cutting-edge technology, Sun has joined forces with Bono, lead singer of U2, to enlist music fans into the ONE Campaign, a movement against AIDS and poverty. With Sun providing a technology solution, DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa), the group founded by Bono to advocate for Africa, is spearheading the ONE Campaign (The Campaign to Make Poverty History) together with a broad coalition of aid agencies.

The custom-built Sun solution allows Bono to call on concertgoers and others to join the effort by using mobile phones to text their names to UNITE (86483), an SMS (Short Message Service) code. Fans get a reply text message from Bono post-concert, driving them to the ONE Campaign Web site.

Sun technology powers the exchange between Bono and fans. Sun created a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) that can rapidly scale to tens of thousands of text messages. The solution was architected, built, and tested in six weeks, demonstrating the efficiency and flexibility of Sun technology and services.

"Sun is supporting ONE with an innovative text messaging solution that allows the audience at rock concerts to join the campaign to make poverty history," says Jamie Drummond, executive director of DATA.
