In 1990, Sun established The Sun Microsystems Foundation, Inc., a separate nonprofit charitable organization that is supported by contributions from Sun Microsystems, Inc. The Foundation was established to serve as the primary vehicle for Sun's community investment efforts and to allow for international charitable contributions. The Foundation Board is composed of Sun employees, including senior management, managers and individual contributors and relies on Sun's Global Community Development department for staffing. The Sun Foundation's Vision: Everyone and everything participating on the network. The Sun Foundation's Mission: Lead a corporate citizenship strategy that promotes global participation (social, civic, educational, entrepreneurial) The Sun Foundation's Cause: Eliminate the digital divide. The Sun Foundation's Strategy: Create opportunities that help drive participation. ProgramsSince its inception, the Sun Microsystems Foundation has contributed grants of Sun technology and services to schools and nonprofit, charitable organizations that seek to increase participation of under represented populations in technology courses and careers. In addition to its education and job training initiatives, the Foundation also provides opportunities through which employees can lend their time, expertise, and resources toward community development initiatives. Following is a list of Foundation programs. Since program guidelines are subject to change from time to time, potential grant applicants are advised to check this site periodically for new opportunities, or contact the Sun Foundation to determine current focus areas and timelines.
