Bridges to K-12 Schools and Colleges

innovateWelcome to the Java Teaching Innovations Portal home page. Curriculum showcased here was developed through The Sun Foundation's two-year Java Grant Program, which partnered the technology leadership of Sun with selected schools and organizations across the United States. Grants, which totaled nearly $500,000, helped educators in California, Colorado, and Massachusetts to develop innovative teaching materials in their schools including Boulder High School, Boulder, Colorado; Denver Public Schools Computer Magnet Program, Denver, Colorado; East Side Union High School District, San Jose, California; Youth Tech Entrepreneurs, Boston, Massachusetts; and Metropolitan State College of Denver, Colorado.

Educators who participated in the program created teaching solutions to engage and inspire all students to learn more about Java. These innovations include projects, lesson plans, gaming activities, presentations, and selected resources for Java instruction.

The specific goals of the Sun Java Grant program were to:

  • Increase student and teacher understanding of Java by helping secondary schools integrate Java programming and "pre-Java" courses in their computer science curricula.
  • Raise the interest and participation of underrepresented students in technology studies and careers.
  • Provide opportunities for Sun employees to use their skills - and learn new ones - by volunteering to help local schools introduce Java to their students.
