 1. Lesson Description

Period of time required for lesson:
4 days, 1 hour each day.

Overall goal of the lesson:
The goal of this lesson is to have students research, collect and organize data from California Native American web sites for the purpose of creating a database of informative sites. Students will then use the information gathered to write a report on one of the Californian Native American tribes. The final step is for the students to publish the database, either on the Payne Elementary web site or in book form for other students and schools to use.

Rationale for the lesson:
This lesson is designed to share information that the students have collected and organized. This lesson also allows students to learn about the characteristics of a web site and manage its information. Students will have to analyze the information in order to decide if it is valid and worth using. This lesson meets both the Technology and Social Science standard for the 4th grade. Students are to study California Native Americans and their cultures as well integrating technology.

Student academic outcome objectives:
Students will be able to:
organize information from the Internet
create a table/database to organize information
earn more about the features of a web site
learn and gather information on California Native Americans
synthesize and evaluate the information gathered and produce a report on California Native Americans

Student social outcome objectives:
Students will be able to:
learn the importance of sharing and disseminating information
work in co-operative groups

Student technical skills outcome objectives:
Students will be able to:
creation of a database within Star Writer 5.1
change size of columns and width
input information into the database
import information from the Internet into the database i.e copying and pasting the URLs
save the database
tile open programs vertically in Star Office 5.1
landscape a page
transfer the document into HTML

Grouping and use of technology in the classroom:
Students will be in a computer lab with two students per computer. They will create their own files and place information to those files. Although each student will input information into one computer, each student should have their own computer to gather information from the internet.

 2. Classroom and Time Management

Group Management:
Students should be in groups of 3 and grouped heterogeneously. The instructor will assign a specific region or area of California for research to each team. The regions are: Southern California, Desert, Coastal, Central Valley, and Mountains, Bay Area.

Time Management:
Day Event
1 Students will be given an information sheet with the regions and keywords to use when searching the Internet. Then assign 5-6 students to each group. With the instructor, students should brainstorm the characteristics of a web site and information they want to collect. Some examples are: Web address, title, tribes that the web site lists, images, links, video and ease of use on a scale of 1-5. Students will create the table capturing these characteristics of each website and save it to their file.
2 Students will be taught how to tile vertically and how to interchange between files that are open. Tiling vertically and looking at a web site, i.e. navigating the web will be demonstrated by the teacher. When ready, students should then begin research.
3 Students will continue with research, filling in their table with appropriate information.
4 The lesson will conclude with a discussion on what to do with the information and how to share this information with others.
