The Sample Projects below have been developed and implemented in classrooms by teachers who have completed the Open Gateways Professional Development Program. They integrate Sun technology into K-12 curriculum.

NOTE: These lesson plans are compatible with StarOffice 5.0 or 5.1.

OVERVIEW
Creating A Storybook
This lesson is for the 1st grade and has students working on their sentence skills. Students will then illustrate their story by either inserting a graphic or create the illustration by hand. This lesson will be implemented at Brooktree Elementary school, which is a diverse school culturally, economically and is a "Success for All" school. This lesson will be done using Star Office 5.1 and will be done in a Sun Systems Computer Lab.
California Native American Slide Show
The 4th grade students of Brooktree Elementary School will be creating a presentation show of the California Native Americans. This will be done as a culmination of research on Native Americans and will allow them to evaluate and synthesize information in a new way making learning more meaningful. Students will be creating their presentations using Star Office 5.1 in a Sun Systems Computer Lab.
Integrating Information Skills and Technology
The 5th grade class at Alvarado Elementary School will write a paper that focuses on the childhoods of historical figures and will also use information-gathering skills. Students have to problem solve how they will create a product, where to research the information and how to use technology to create the product. This is done with a teacher that specializes in teaching technology skills and information-gathering skills. This lesson also has students draw comparisons between the historical figure and their own childhoods to help them grow as individuals. This lesson will be done in a Sun Systems Computer Lab using Star Office 5.1.
My Storybook
The 2nd grade students of Payne Elementary School will be creating their own storybook about their favorite butterfly. This is taking place after a unit of studying about butterflies. Students will be able to represent what they learned in the creation of their stories. Students will then publish their books and distribute them to fellow classrooms. All this will take place using Star Office 5.1, in a Sun Systems Computer Lab.
California Native American Database
The 4th grade students at Payne Elementary School will be creating their own page in their school web site on California Native Americans. Students with the guidance of their teacher, Mr. Ruben will create a database of Californian Native American Internet sites to do their research paper. Students at Payne are putting the information up on their homepage so that other students can use the information to learn more about Californian Native Americans. Students are also thinking about publishing the information in book form to distribute to other schools so that students will have a richer learning experience. All this will be done using Star Office 5.1 in a Sun Systems Computer Lab.
