 1. Lesson Description

Period of time required for lesson:
8 days, 50 minutes each day.

Overall goal of the lesson:
The goals of this lesson are to have students become familiar with the computer through the creation of a storybook and to learn more about butterflies. In this lesson, students learn how to word process, illustrate, edit and print a document. Students will also practice their writing skills and sentence structure.

Rationale for the lesson:
This lesson is designed to introduce students to the use of technology. The Language Arts Standard for 2nd grade is "1.1, Distinguish between complete and incomplete sentences. 1.2, Recognize and use the correct word order in written sentences. Grammar 1.3, Identify and correctly use various parts of speech, including nouns and verbs, in writing and speaking. Punctuation, 1.4 Use commas in the greeting and closure of a letter and with dates and items in a series. 1.5, Use quotation marks correctly. Capitalization, 1.6 Capitalize all proper nouns, words at the beginning of sentences and greetings, months and days of the week, and titles and initials of people. Spelling, 1.7 Spell frequently used, irregular words correctly e.g., was, were, says, said, who, what, why). 1.8, Spell basic short-vowel, long-vowel, r-controlled, and consonant-blend patterns correctly".

open and close Star Writer
save a file in Star Office 5.1
create a new Star Writer document
format the document and change font size
use a page break
spell and grammar check
import graphics from the Internet a. Cut, paste and send to clipboard
print a document


Grouping and use of technology in the classroom:
The students will be working in a lab of 27 computers and will work on their own computer. Students will have written their stories out ahead of time, edited them and created the final copy to input into the computer.

 2. Classroom and Time Management

Group Management:
Students will be working individually on this lesson, but may help one another.

Time Management:
Day Event
1-2 Students learn the word processing skills.
3-4 Students write their story in class and then will work in the computer lab to word process their story.
5-6 Students learn how to find and import graphics from the Internet and how to place them within their stories.
7-8 Students continue to import graphics from the Internet. Upon finishing their stories, the stories shall be printed and turned in by the student.

 4. Assessment

Students will be assessed on the finish product of the storybook, on how well they followed directions, and on the technical skills needed to create the storybook.
