 1. Lesson Description

Period of time required for lesson:
2-3 months, 50 minutes every other day.

Overall goal of the lesson:
The goal of this lesson is to have students create a presentation of various California Native American tribes. Students will discover how different geographic locations impacted lives, religious beliefs, legends, and how they were unique and similar among many cultures of the world. Through this lesson, the students understanding of California Native American will be augmented.

Rationale for the lesson:
This lesson is designed to meet the Social Studies standard for the 4th grade states: "Students describe the social, political, cultural and economic life and interactions among people of California in terms of: the major nations of California Indians, their geographic distribution, economic activities, legends, and religious beliefs; and how they depended upon, adapted to and modified the physical environment by cultivation of land and sea resources".

Student academic outcome objectives:
Students will be able to:
identify the locations of the various tribes
identify the available land and water resources and how they were used
retell a legend and relate it to beliefs that the tribe held about family life and nature
evaluate and synthesize this information in a presentation
Student social outcome objectives:
Students will be able to:
listen and follow directions
work in co-operative groups
disseminate the work they completed
work together to make decisions


Student technical skills outcome objectives:
Students will learn how to:
log on and off
create a folder for their work and graphics
save their work to the folder they created
open and close Star presentation
choose the presentation template they wish to use
create the number of slides they will need, by inserting the new slides
change font size, color and style
import graphics from the Internet
save graphics to a file they create
create blank slides with out a template
spell check the slides
activate the presentation system
see various dialogue boxes that allows them to create the slides


Grouping and use of technology in the classroom:
Each student group should have use of their own computer and will be seated in teams.

 2. Classroom and Time Management

Group Management:
Students will be in co-operative groups of 2 to 3 and will each have roles with in the group.

Time Management:
Day Event
1 Introduction to the lesson and students are given the directions. Student groups are formed. Groups choose their tribe.
2-35: Students will gather information, research, and create a storyboard.
36-50: Students will input the information into the computer.
51-55: Students will present the information they have collected and integrated into a presentation.

 4. Assessment

Teacher and students will create a rubric/checklist for the project. Teacher will create a checklist for the students to follow. Students then evaluate each other's presentations.
