 1. Lesson Description

Period of time required for lesson:
10 days, 45 minutes each day.

Overall goal of the lesson:
The goal of this lesson is to have students create and publish a storybook with illustrations.

Rationale for the lesson:
This lesson is designed to meet the Language Arts Standard for 1st grade, "Select a focus when writing. Use descriptive words when writing. Print legibly and space letters, words, and sentences appropriately. Students write compositions that describe and explain familiar objects, events, and experiences. Student writing demonstrates a command of standard American English and the drafting, research, and organizational strategies".

Student academic outcome objectives:
Students will be able to:
write three sentences
space, punctuate and use correct spelling
represent their story through graphics or illustrations


Student social outcome objectives:
Students will be able to:
follow directions
to respect one another's work
use appropriate computer lab behavior


Student technical skills outcome objectives:
Students will be able to:
log on and log out
open Star Writer and close it
use 24-point font
center the title
use the shift key for capitalization
create a graphics folder
save a graphic from the Internet into the graphics folder
import the graphic from a folder into their document
be able to insert a graphic into the gallery
save the document to a folder
print the document


Grouping and use of technology in the classroom:
Students will write their stories ahead of time and input them into the computer. Students will then choose the graphics from the Star Office Gallery or they will illustrate them on their own. Students will work individually.

 2. Classroom and Time Management

Group Management:
Students will work individually.

Time Management:
Day Event
1 Introduction to the idea of writing on one topic. Teacher will model this.
2 Students write their sentences.
3 Students edit their sentences and then re-write them.
4-10 Students input their stories into the computer and then illustrate them. Students will learn new technical skills needed for this lesson. Students will print the document and create a storybook.
