 1. Lesson Description

Period of time required for lesson:
8 days, 55-minute each day

Overall goal of the lesson:
The goal of this lesson is to have students create oral presentations and slide shows that present their conclusions on how population affects the formation of a state. Students will use data on gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status and migration that they previously gathered for their spreadsheet lesson. Students will present a thesis and use data to support their findings.

Rationale for the lesson:
This lesson is designed to meet the language arts, mathematics, and social studies standards for fifth grade. Fifth-grade students should be able to display, analyze, and interpret data; understand cause, effect, sequence and correlation in historical events; and recognize and explain the emergence of new patterns.

Student academic outcome objectives:
Students will be able to:
present a thesis and supporting evidence in an oral presentation
synthesize information to present in a slide show
analyze data, identify trends and make predictions
identify cause and effect relationships in historical events

Student social outcome objectives:
Students will be able to:
assume specific roles and work together to complete a slide show
arrive at a consensus on what ideas and evidence to include in a slide show
work within a group and listen to peer presentations

Student technical skills outcome objectives:
Students will learn how to:
use Star Autopilot
select a template
select a background and presentation medium
choose a slide transition speed
create additional slides
enter graphics into a slide
create text in a slide
edit a slide
arrange the order of slides

Prerequisite Academic Skills:
Students should:
have population and economic statistics about their state gathered for the newsletter and spreadsheet lessons
know how to identify cause and effect and trends in population and economic development
be able to synthesize information for inclusion in a slide show

Prerequisite Social Skills:
Students should know how to:
assume different roles to work in a collaborative setting
share information to contribute to the overall success of a group
use listening skills to participate in group discussions and evaluate oral reports

Prerequisite Technical Skills:
Students should know how to:
reboot in case of system failure
log on to their computer network
use the basic interface features of StarOffice 5.1
create a new document and save it to the appropriate folder
open, save, and print a document
navigate within a document

 2. Classroom and Time Management

Group Management:
Students will work in heterogeneous groups of four, with each group deciding on the key ideas to present in a slide show, and then handling the formatting, layout, and organization of the slide show.

Technology Management:

Students should have sufficient room to write and work around a common workspace
Students will work together creating a design and layout plan on paper for their slide show
Students will make all format, layout, and design decisions
Students will work individually to create the slides for their part of the presentation
Student groups will combine their slides on one computer to complete their slide shows, create title slides, and organize transitions and timing

Time Management:
Day Event
1 Students form groups, begin to work together designing their slide show, determining key ideas, and choosing the evidence to present
2-4 Students work on the design, layout, and format of their slide shows. Groups create templates of their final projects on paper. Individual students begin to create slides for the final presentation
5-6 Students complete slides, bring all slides together, create a title slide, and decide on transitions and timing. Groups practice their oral presentations
7-8 Student groups present their slide shows to the class
