Grant Descriptions
The Sun Microsystems Foundation's sponsorship of the Employee Matched Giving Program allows Sun employees the opportunity to support a wide variety of charitable organizations. Through this program, donations that employees make to their favorite nonprofit organization have the potential to be matched $1 for $1 (up to $1,000 per fiscal year) by the Sun Microsystems Foundation.
The Foundation awards Community Development Grants to schools and nonprofit organizations to support programs designed to increase education and employment opportunities for people living and working near Sun facilities. These grants support community efforts to reverse conditions that produce high unemployment, low income and unsatisfactory school performance.
Community Partnership Grants are awarded to schools and nonprofit organizations in communities in areas outside Sun's the largest employment regions. Working as volunteers, Sun employees engage in such activities as teaching classes, developing classroom materials, raising funds for the needy, aiding the physically and mentally disabled, conducting youth career workshops and acting as role models.
The Open Gateways programs is geared toward K-12 teachers and students. The goals are to assist schools in transitioning to network computing. Utilizing Sun technologies, students and teacher have expanded access to curricula and references.
The Foundation awards board discretionary grants to local organizations after an initial review of the grant application. In fiscal year 2002, the Foundation awarded small cash grants to ten charitable organizations.
