2007 Corporate Social Responsibility Report

Corporate Responsibility

Sun employees are eager to take part in greening our company, and we need their involvement to achieve our eco responsibility goals. We use communications and events to engage employees in energy-saving, recycling, and water-conservation programs. For example:

  • My Eco Idea is an email address that any employee can use to contact our eco responsibility team to share ideas for reducing the environmental impact of our operations. Hundreds of employees worldwide have submitted their ideas this way.
  • We regularly provide employees with information on conservation, including links to resources. We also display posters with energy-saving tips at all Sun campuses.

Eco Responsible Events

We again encouraged participants to cycle to our annual JavaOne developers' conference by offering a free bike valet service. This saved an estimated five metric tons of CO2e emissions. We also advertised the 2007 conference electronically rather than by mail, and used recycled paper for conference materials. In 2008, we plan to decrease conference CO2 emissions 20% by increasing recycling, cycling, and alternative transportation, and by further reducing paper use.

Environmental Savings at the JavaOne Conference
  • 58 tons of CO2 emissions, or the equivalent of keeping 3676 cars off the road for one day
  • 95 tons of wood, or the equivalent of 612 trees
  • 335,000 gallons of water, or 53% of the daily water intake through food and beverages of the population of San Francisco
  • 25 tons of solid waste, or the daily trash production of 11,400 people

Office Supplies

In fiscal 2007, we selected Office Depot to provide our office supplies globally. Office Depot offers thousands of greener products, including office paper containing 10% post-consumer recycled content, which we now use. In fiscal 2008, we intend to buy more products from Office Depot's green products list. For more details, see the Green Procurement section in "Our Suppliers."

SMART Commuting Program

We encourage U.S. employees to take part in our Sun Microsystems Alternative Resources for Transportation (SMART) program. The SMART program offers transit subsidies and passes for commuting to work to employees at all major U.S. locations. In fiscal 2007, 3341 employees — approximately 10% of Sun's population — made use of these.

We provide employees in the San Francisco Bay Area a convenient alternative to driving to work. SunWay shuttle services are provided to and from our Santa Clara, Menlo Park, Newark, San Francisco, and Sunnyvale locations. The shuttles fit in with public transit schedules and run as early as 6:00 a.m. and as late as 7:00 p.m.

The following chart shows use of the SunWay shuttle service in fiscal 2007. The monthly total represents the number of rides given. Since most people using the service travel to and from work each day, we can assume that the number of users is roughly half the number of rides given.

In fiscal 2008, we hope to increase participation in all aspects of SMART by 5% through increased employee communication focused on new and relocated employees and onsite transit and safety fairs.
