2007 Corporate Social Responsibility Report

Corporate Responsibility

As a global technology company, Sun is in an excellent position to take action on global challenges such as climate change. We help our customers to act, too, by developing some of the most energy-efficient products on the market today. But we also need to minimize the footprint of our operations, and we're committed to reducing our emissions of the greenhouse gases (GHG) that contribute to climate change.

More than 90% of reported GHG emissions from our operations are from electricity use in our facilities. The second largest emissions source is the combustion of natural gas for heating buildings and water. Other sources include the employee shuttle fleet in the San Francisco Bay Area and backup generators used across the company. Finally, refrigerants and fire suppressants make up a small portion of total emissions.

In 2004, Sun set a goal to reduce GHG emissions from our U.S. operations by 20% (from 2002 levels) by 2012. We publicly committed to this as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Climate Leaders program. To help us reach this goal, we've created a GHG inventory going back to 2002, which we completed during fiscal 2007 for our U.S. operations.

Sun is committed to producing a complete account of our global GHG emissions by the end of the 2007 calendar year. Once this is complete, we plan to create a company-wide GHG management plan and set a global reduction target. We expect these to be in place by the end of fiscal 2008. We originally planned to complete these tasks by the end of fiscal 2007, but this has proved to be very challenging.
