The inventory records carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. We express the totals in this report in terms of CO2 equivalents (CO2e). Our inventory currently includes Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions as defined by the World Resources Institute's Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
- Scope 1: All direct GHG emissions (those created on our sites)
- Scope 2: Indirect GHG emissions from consumption of purchased energy
- Scope 3: Other indirect emissions, such as those created by:
- The extraction and production of purchased materials and fuels
- Transport-related activities in vehicles not owned or controlled by the company
- Electricity-related activities not covered in Scope 2, for example, energy lost during transmission and distribution
- Outsourced activities
- Waste disposal

We're progressing with a complete account of our global Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions and will use this to create a management plan and set further targets. Once these are in place, we'll consider expanding the inventory to include Scope 3 emissions.
Business Travel
In the 2006 calendar year, Sun employees worldwide logged more than 350 million miles of business travel by air or rail.
To estimate the associated CO2e emissions, we assumed that all travel was on medium-haul flights. Using the Greenhouse Gas Protocol's CO2 Emissions from Business Travel, Version 2.0 tool, we estimate that CO2e emissions from our worldwide business travel equaled 70,000 metric tons in 2006. We'll use this figure as a baseline for future reductions.
We're working closely with our corporate travel agency to obtain a more detailed breakdown of short-, medium-, and long-haul flights as well as air miles versus rail travel. We're also working to obtain total rental car miles driven so that the related emissions can be included. More details can be found in the Green Procurement section in "Our Suppliers."
We expect to provide a more refined and accurate assessment of the environmental impact of our business travel in the future.
