2007 Corporate Social Responsibility Report

Corporate Responsibility

By the end of the 2006 calendar year, we had reduced GHG emissions from our U.S. operations by 6.5% from 2002 levels. We closed a number of buildings and made efficiency improvements during the last half of fiscal 2007. We expect to see continuing significant emission reductions as a result. This will accelerate progress toward our goal of a 20% reduction in U.S. GHG emissions by 2012.

All figures from our emissions inventory are reported by calendar rather than fiscal year.

2006 Total U.S. GHG Emissions by Source (metric tons CO2e)

Emissions Source CO2e (metric tons)
Direct emissions — combustion (natural gas and diesel) 13,161
Direct emissions — mobile sources (shuttle fleet) 162
Direct emissions — refrigerants and fire suppressants 544
Indirect emissions (from purchased electricity) 221,183
Total 235,050

2002 – 2005 GHG Emissions from U.S. Operations (metric tons CO2e)

Year Scope 1 CO2e Scope 2 CO2e Total CO2e
2002 18,384 245,626 264,010
2003 17,419 259,782 277,201
2004 15,359 249,209 264,568
2005 14,648 238,757 253,405

We're in the process of gathering GHG emissions data for Sun's non-U.S. operations. The following table summarizes the non-U.S. country-level emissions that have been compiled for the 2006 calendar year.

Goals

  • Reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from U.S. operations by 20% from 2002 levels by 2012
  • Produce a baseline of our global GHG emissions by the end of the 2007 calendar year
  • Introduce a companywide GHG management plan and reduction target by the end of fiscal 2008
  • Increase the amount of energy we consume from renewable sources
  • Reduce energy consumption in our buildings in fiscal 2008 by 3% compared with fiscal 2007
  • Achieve LEED certification for one Sun building by the end of fiscal 2008 and another 10 to 20 buildings by the end of fiscal 2009
  • Introduce peak-load reduction plans at all our U.S. facilities in fiscal 2008
  • Decrease CO2e emissions from the 2008 JavaOne conference by 20% compared with 2007
  • Publicly report on progress toward reducing GHG emissions
