Following are a few of the comments we received from Sun employees after the release of our inaugural 2006 CSR report:
- The fact that we as a company are thinking about the impact our business has on society and environment is just great!
- Currently, the SMART program offers a $20-per-quarter commuter subsidy check. Why not extend a modification of this program to hybrid vehicles in the form of a one-time subsidy?
- We all know hybrids cost more money than their conventional gasoline counterparts. This price differential is quite a
barrier to purchase, and if this barrier could be lowered or eliminated, more of these cars and trucks would be sold.
- The more I read about our initiatives, it makes me wonder how we can take our initiatives and bring it to the common
person on the street. Somehow, I think this is still an area that we need to work on.
- Why can't Sun take recycling more seriously? I believe every Sun office globally should have a recycling program backed by Workplace Resources for paper, cardboard (we produce so much of it), metals, plastics . . . a small effort for a great return to the planet!
- I just looked through the CSR report. It's great that we're paying attention and taking action on so many different social issues. Historically, companies seem to feel they're in some sort of twilight zone where the only impact they have is financial.
- As far as I can tell, of the many funds we can choose from for our 401(k), none of them have any CSR commitment component, whether it's from an ecological perspective or other socially responsible positions. These days I think people realize CSR and SRI (Socially Responsible Investing) are by no means incompatible with profitability. When one thinks of the size of Sun's employee investment in these funds, I think it adds up to a pretty big responsibility and opportunity.
