2007 Corporate Social Responsibility Report

Protection of the environment, and particularly the threat of global climate change, has become a key challenge for governments around the world. Governments play an essential role in achieving sustainable development by helping to shape industries and markets. They're uniquely positioned to bring transparency to consumers seeking product-related environmental information and, due to their size, can have significant influence on advancing "green procurement."

In our engagement with governments, we strive to create a better understanding of the challenges we face and the solutions we can contribute, so that the most effective long-term policies and practices are encouraged. We give particular emphasis to encouraging the adoption of energy-efficient technologies and practices within government.

Some examples of our engagements with thought leaders and governments around the world during fiscal 2007 include:

  • Contributed to the U.S. EPA Report to Congress on energy efficiency of servers and datacenters, the result of legislation Sun helped develop in fiscal 2006 and the basis for further legislation to encourage greater adoption of energy-efficient servers and datacenters
  • Encouraged China's Ministry of Information Industry, along with other U.S. technology companies, to support existing, effective international norms, such as the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS), for substance restrictions, premarket certifications, labeling, and information disclosure requirements
  • Joined the Carbon Disclosure Project
  • Participated in the Efficient Servers project, run under the EU program Intelligent Energy Europe, which publishes case studies and guidelines to promote market development for energy-efficient servers
  • Participated in updating the ENERGY STAR specifications — through our membership in the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) — by working closely with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the benchmarks, testing procedures, and specifications for workstation energy usage
  • Provided guidance to the Speaker of the House and the Chief Administrative Officer for the U.S. House of Representatives in their Greening the Capitol Initiative, a program designed to improve the energy efficiency and diminish the environmental impact of federal office buildings
  • Signatory of the Climate Call to Action, an initiative spearheaded by Ceres and the Investor Network on Climate Risk
