Other Volunteer Programs

Engineers Without Borders

Following Sun's 2007 JavaOne Conference, we developed an Engineers Without Borders chapter, which encourages our engineers to participate in social-change programs. The chapter is establishing a wireless broadband connection at a field station in the Cocobolo Nature Reserve in Panama. Featuring Sun SPOTS technology donated by Sun Labs, this effort will support rainforest research and foster education in surrounding communities.

Hogar en Patas

The 2007 CSR report highlighted Sun Argentina's work with nonprofit Hogar en Patas to help young people develop new life skills. In 2008, Comité Solidario, Sun Argentina's volunteer group, donated and set up a Sun Ray computer lab at Hogar en Patas' youth facilities. The project aims to help children gain basic technical skills and Internet literacy.

Meetup Mashup

In conjunction with the 2008 CommunityOne conference, Sun partnered with nonprofit organization NetSquared to host the Meetup Mashup. In this event, Sun developers worked with nonprofit organizations to build Web applications for a variety of causes.

During fiscal 2009, we plan to host similar events around the world.
