2008 Corporate Social Responsibility Report

CSR Report: Eco Responsibility

We target and monitor the energy use of our operations, buildings, travel, and events to continually improve energy efficiency and reduce our operational footprint.

In fiscal 2008, we focused on our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the main sources of which are purchased electricity and natural gas, our employee shuttle fleet, and backup generators.

We've reduced energy use through a combination of efficiency improvements, infrastructure consolidation, and our Open Work flexible work program. We're developing an energy management plan and are a committed partner of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Climate Leaders program.

And we've already met our Climate Leaders goal to reduce our U.S. carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions 20% by 2012, from 2002 levels.

Global, Grassroots Sustainability at Sun

Many Sun employees have a personal interest in sustainability and relish the opportunity to take part in company initiatives. In Australia and New Zealand, a group of volunteers is addressing issues related to energy use, transportation, purchasing, waste, water, and eco awareness. The team reports quarterly on energy use in Sun offices in the region and has begun to set local energy-reduction goals.

In the United Kingdom, a similar team is addressing waste, water, energy, and public policy and has committed our U.K. operations to strict emissions targets through our participation in the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) Climate Change Task Force.

We're developing resources and collaboration tools to encourage more employees to get involved with sustainability initiatives – further underscoring our contention that every job is an eco job.
