2008 Corporate Social Responsibility Report

Greenhouse Gas Measurements

Scope 1 All direct GHG emissions (those created on our sites)

Scope 2 Indirect GHG emissions from consumption of purchased energy

Scope 3 Other indirect emissions, such as those created by:

  • The extraction and production of purchased materials and fuels
  • Transportation-related activities in vehicles not owned or controlled by the company
  • Electricity-related activities not covered in Scope 2 (for example, energy lost during transmission and distribution)
  • Outsourced activities
GHG emissions and reduction targets are based on the calendar year rather than fiscal year, in accordance with the EPA Climate Leaders program guidelines.

GHG emissions are expressed in terms of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). CO2e is the amount of CO2 that would have the same effect on the climate as a given mixture and amount of other greenhouse gases, such as methane, over a specified time scale (usually 100 years).

Reaching Our 2012 GHG Reduction Goal

We've already reached our EPA Climate Leaders goal of a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions from 2002 levels by 2012. We reduced CO2 emissions from U.S. operations by 23.4% from 2002 levels by the end of 2007. This was largely due to greater efficiency and building consolidation.

Energy and Emissions Inventory

The EPA Climate Leaders program continually reviews Sun's emissions inventory data as well as our progress in reaching our GHG emissions goal. In addition, Sun is receiving technical assistance from EPA in determining organizational and operational boundaries, identifying the most appropriate emission factors for our industry, and documenting these decisions in an inventory management plan (IMP) that will ensure consistency and transparency in the inventory over time. EPA performs desktop reviews of both the inventory data and IMP to ensure they meet EPA quality standards, and the agency also conducts a risk-based onsite IMP review to ensure that the plan is being implemented at the facility level.

The EPA Climate Leaders inventory includes facilities over which Sun has operational control. Fully 17% of Sun's total real estate consists of leased offices controlled by the building owner. We don't receive the utility bills for these buildings and have little ability to decrease energy use and emissions. We intend to include estimated energy use and emissions figures, calculated using accepted methodologies, in our 2009 CSR report.

Although Scope 3 emissions (see Greenhouse Gas Measurements sidebar) are not included in Sun's Climate Leaders inventory or reduction goal, we have begun to estimate and track business travel. (See Travel and Transit section.) In fiscal 2009 we'll also estimate emissions related to supply chain logistics.

Sun also reports our GHG emissions as part of the Carbon Disclosure Project.
