2008 Corporate Social Responsibility Report

CSR Report: Eco Responsibility

With more than 300 offices around the world, we work hard to make waste management—including proper treatment of garbage, recycling, and hazardous waste—a top priority. Sun waste is properly managed both legally and through best-management practices. We strive to minimize the waste we produce and reuse and recycle whenever possible. We even use some waste for energy generation.

While we believe we have strong waste management programs in place, collecting data that we can publish has been a challenge. However, we're committed to improving and are making progress. Waste data in this report is more limited than we would like, but it's far more robust than any we've previously published. We will continue to improve our data collection in this area and report on progress.

Operational Waste

  • Hazardous waste has the potential to harm human health or the environment when improperly managed.

  • Universal waste contains materials that need to be prevented from free release into the environment. Sun's universal waste includes batteries and fluorescent-light tubes.

  • Industrial waste is nonhazardous liquid and solid waste that should not be discarded directly into a landfill. Sun's industrial waste includes oils for recycling, cooling tower water and sludges, and construction debris.
