2008 Corporate Social Responsibility Report

CSR Report: Introduction

We work hard to involve our global workforce in sustainability at Sun. We've taken a number of steps to expand the appeal and reach of employee-targeted initiatives and have more planned for fiscal 2009.

In fiscal 2008, we launched an internal campaign called Every Job Is an Eco Job. We used communication tools such as presentations, targeted email, online communities, surveys, and intranet postings to encourage employees to explore how their jobs can contribute to Sun's social and eco responsibility and business goals. This helps us better integrate sustainability into every aspect of our business.

We've renamed our Employee Advisory Board the Sun Employee Sustainability Council to align it with our corporate sustainability strategy. This group provides a sounding board and feedback mechanism for our social and eco responsibility teams. The council grew from 28 to 47 members in 2008, 13% of whom are based outside the United States.

In March 2008, we launched an employee sustainability group on the social networking site Facebook, in an effort to use the site's popularity to engage employees. At the end of fiscal 2008, the group had 145 members around the world, out of more than 5,000 employees who use the site.

See why at Sun, every job is an eco job.

Surveying Employees

In the 2008 Power of Sun employee survey, we asked our employees if they felt that Sun acts as a socially and environmentally responsible company. In every type of job in every region, the proportion of employees answering "agree" or "strongly agree" increased from the previous survey, sometimes dramatically.

Goals

We'll continue to expand our employee engagement efforts. We hope to create an Employee Resource Group focused on sustainability and will continue to encourage participation in Sun's Employee Sustainability Council. We're also investigating ways to encourage and support local, grassroots sustainability networks in Sun locations around the world.
