If I were asked to look ahead at how the past year will be remembered, I'd say it will be thought of as a year of change. Business, politics, world affairs, the arts, the sciences, and more have all been subject to monumental transformation.

That's especially true in the world of technology. The promise and potential of technology to drive progress for the global good continually inspire hope and confidence – for our company's future, the future of our planet, and for the global population.

Why am I so confident? Because Sun has seen how our commitment to positive change—through innovation, action, and a dedication to openness—has created value for our company, both as a technology leader and as a corporate citizen.

Innovate. Act. Share. These are the guiding principles of Sun's corporate social responsibility effort. We apply our innovation and creativity to helping solve the world's most complex and seemingly intractable business and technical problems. We put our innovation into action by creating a work environment where courageous thinking is lauded and unexpected results are rewarded.

And perhaps most importantly, we share – as much as we know today. This type of openness underpins every aspect of Sun's business, from our software development to our greenhouse gas emissions reporting. Why? Because openness has always been a powerful force for progress. And when people are empowered to change their world—in their way, however they can—the possibilities are endless.

That's why we've been able to deliver positive results – for our customers, employees, stockholders, partners, and communities. We create eco responsible solutions that deliver more performance, use less energy, and save money. We implement programs to reduce our impact on global climate change – and help others do the same. And as the leader in open source, we share our technologies with the global community to increase accessibility and participation.

Sun's 2008 CSR report is a snapshot of where we are on our sustainability journey.
