2008 Corporate Social Responsibility Report

The Network is the Computer. It's what Sun is all about.

We believe in the power of participation on the network to open markets, develop economies, build knowledge, grow communities, and protect and sustain the planet. And it's our business to give everyone, everywhere the chance to participate. In doing so, we uphold several principles important to Sun:

  • We seek to innovate — and foster other innovators — in the open.
  • We aim to embed privacy principles into our every action.
  • We view the network as business' most powerful tool for gaining and keeping competitive advantage — and one of the most powerful ways for communities to collaborate and cooperate.
  • We work to keep the network open while keeping its users — and their information and resources — secure.
  • We dedicate resources, time, and expertise to ensuring that physical differences and disabilities are not barriers to access.

The Network

Within the context of computing, a network is usually a collection of systems, software, and storage connected to transmit data. The network can also mean the Internet, a worldwide collection of interconnected networks. In this larger view, the network does more than facilitate data exchange — it's a social and economic resource. It enables businesses to reach out to new customers. And people, gathered together into social networks, can interact and share with others and create new communities. For many, the network is an integral part of daily life.
