Sun's SMART (Sun Microsystems Alternative Resources for Transportation) Commute ProgramThe SMART program provides Sun employees with up to date commuter information, incentives and shuttles connecting public transportation to Sun campuses. Since 1991 SMART's programs and services have been designed to help employees find convenient alternatives to driving alone to work, such as carpooling, transit, bicycling and walking. SMART's mission is to design and implement an internal commute alternatives program that benefits Sun, its employees and local communities. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized Sun Microsystems as one of the top 5 Best US Workplaces for Commuters. The EPA's list lauded Fortune 500 companies that made a major effort to ease commutes for their employees, which ultimately helps ease traffic congestion and air pollution. Best Workplaces for Commuters recognizes employers that voluntarily meet the National Standard of Excellence in employer-provided commuter benefits. Sun's comprehensive Commute Benefit program results in reduced commute trips being made by Sun employees, less air pollution created, and less commute stress and cost for Sun employees. SMART's commuting programs include:
Any full or part time Sun employee who commutes by public transit or formal vanpool an average of 2 or more times per week to a participating campus, is eligible to receive a monthly Commuter Check subsidy. Commuter Checks are vouchers that you can use to subsidize the purchase of monthly transit passes and formal vanpools. Shuttle & Transit Services Regional shuttle programs are supported by Sun, other neighboring companies, Regional Air Quality Management District's, local transit agencies and other public and private sector entities. Sun's shuttle services are designed to connect employees with regional transit agencies, and neighboring campuses. Guaranteed Ride Home With Sun's Guaranteed Ride Home program you will never be stranded at work in case of an emergency. If you use a commute alternative and are unable to take your normal ride home, the SMART program has made arrangements for a cab to get you where you need to go. This service is offered at no cost to you when you use a commute alternative Regional Transit Passes Any full or part time Sun employee who commutes by public transit an average of 2 or more times per week to a participating campus, is eligible to participate in a regional transit pass program. Bicycling is a fun and convenient transportation alternative and is becoming an increasingly popular commute choice. Carpooling & Ridematching Services Sharing the ride with one or more of your co-workers is an easy way to reduce the stress, expense, and environmental impacts associated with your commute. What's more, most carpoolers and vanpoolers save time by using the SOV (Shared Occupancy Vehicle) lanes on your local bridges and freeways.
