Eco-Responsibility from Sun: Good For Your Business, Great For Our Planet
- Sun is committed to eliminating the digital divide so that everyone can participate on the network. But we know that as the number of people using computing devices grows, so does our consumption of energy and natural resources. The natural resources that are fueling global power grids are finite but our appetite for faster, better, cheaper computing infrastructure isn't. Through our Eco-Responsibility Initiative, Sun is taking a leadership position to encourage everyone in our industry to make sustainable computing a corporate imperative.
Sun's commitment to eco-responsibility is grounded on three values: Innovate, Act, Share
- Innovate: We recognize the opportunity to bring Sun's innovative and technological leadership to bear on the matter of eco-responsibility. We develop innovative solutions based on eco-responsible designs, materials, and technologies.
- What we are doing: Delivering eco-responsible products including UltraSPARC T1 with CoolThreads technology, Sun Fire x64 Servers, Sun Grid, and Sun Ray Thin Clients.
- Act: We all observe the environmental and social systems around us and take action to improve these systems through technology. We commit to making a positive contribution and to base that contribution on our best talents and skills.
- What we are doing: Our environmental programs include recycling and waste reduction, use of clean materials, and the iWork Program for Sun employees.
- Share: We seek to take a leadership role in our industry to provide value and choices for our customers and for everyone participating in the network. We are committed to sharing our ideas and technologies to help support eco-responsibility throughout our industry.
- What we are doing: Sun OpenWork Practice enables our customers to offer flexible work solutions to their employees.
Sun's Corporate Environment, Health and Safety Policy
Sun Microsystems, Inc. is committed to the ongoing protection of human health, the environment and the conservation of valuable material and energy resources throughout the design and realization of its products. We recognize that by integrating sound environment, health and safety management practices into all aspects of our business, we can offer technologically innovative products and services while conserving resources now and in the future. We will protect the health and safety of employees, and other persons who may be affected by our activities, and will work to minimize our environmental impact. We believe that Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) management can support and enhance other business priorities. We, therefore, commit to a continual and cost effective improvement in EHS performance, prevention of pollution, and conservation of resources.
In particular we will:
- Comply with applicable EHS laws and regulations and standards Sun Microsystems subscribes to;
- Provide for the health and safety of employees and other persons who may be affected by our activities;
- Provide working environments, work equipment, and systems that are safe and that minimize risks to human health and the environment;
- Identify and assess environmental impacts arising from our business activities, products, and our business relationships;
- Set objectives and targets to guide our efforts to minimize health and safety risks and environmental impacts;
- Implement appropriate procedures for monitoring and measuring progress in meeting our EHS objectives and targets;
- Proactively communicate Sun's environment, health and safety performance to all stakeholders;
- Review the Environment, Health and Safety Management System (EHSMS) during management reviews to ensure its alignment with current business operations; and
- Confirm this policy is available publicly for any individual or group to review.
