Protecting Employee Health & Safety.

At Sun, we believe in going beyond mere compliance with employee health & safety rules. We believe in creating a safe and comfortable workplace that ensures that each Sun employee has the opportunity to maximize their productivity and enjoyment of the workplace.

Sun's occupational health & safety programs center on four principle areas:

Ergonomics

Sun's ergonomics program is one of the most elaborate such programs in the industry, and encompasses everything within an employee's physical workspace environment - posture while seated, rest and exercise breaks, proper use of the computer keyboard and mouse, and even office lighting and furniture.
The following programs are available at all Sun's U.S.-based sites:
  • Physical and behavioral training classes
  • Written literature
  • A special training video
  • Personal, one-to-one evaluations
  • A Web-based personal training module and a substantive overview
Similar accomodations are available to employees at non-U.S. sites.  Employees can try out chairs in special ergonomic demonstration rooms at various Sun campuses. Each Sun employee can request and receive a one-on-one ergonomic evaluation. Evaluation personnel will schedule an office visit, where they provide a 20- to 40-minute evaluation to determine if behavioral changes, additional training or change of equipment such as ergonomic chairs, wrist rests and glare screens will result in a more comfortable and productive work environment.

Indoor Air Quality

Given that the sealed office building is a fact of life for most employees today, office personnel depend on smoothly functioning heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to maintain the quality of indoor air. These systems keep buildings cool in summer and warm in winter; bring in fresh outside air to help prevent the buildup of CO2 and other unpleasant gases; and vent substances and odors from recently painted walls, new carpets, and new furnishings.

Sun's air sampling program includes random sampling for temperature, humidity, airflow, and CO2, as well as testing, when requested or when the circumstances warrant it, for hundreds of substances such as microbials, gasses, or particulates. And our indoor air quality system even protects from pesticides: Spraying for pests is implemented through vendors who use an integrated pest management strategy that eliminates the need for indoor spraying of annoying chemicals.

Electrical Safety

Sun employees in server labs and data center environments may occassionaly require a number of additional EHS services. The EHS team trains employees who work with and around electrical connections in the proper use of electrical safety practices and awareness - such as the handling of connections, the  use of outlets, devices and power switches, and the types of problems that require special expertise or third parties specially trained in electrical issues.

Chemical Handling & Safety

While Sun's operations involve a very limited use of chemicals, the EHS team provides training in the proper use of personal protective equipment for employees who may encounter or use chemicals in labs and assembly environments. This equipment includes safety glasses, goggles, gloves and aprons. A regular training program entails instruction on how to handle chemicals safely and legally; keeping proper documentation; using material safety data sheets; and utilizing hazard communication programs and procedures -- including how to respond to chemical spills, should such things occur.

A program called Cleanliness, Effectiveness and Orderliness ("CEO"), based on the Japanese "Five S" system, is devoted to ensuring proper organization in the manufacturing environment of Sun's assembly facilities. Its goals:

  • Reduce the risks associated with manufacturing
  • Use cleanliness as a means of eliminating emergencies
  • Train employees about the appropriate structure of a manufacturing environment
