Environment, Health & Safety at Sun.
The Environment, Health & Safety function at Sun Microsystems is responsible for issues relating to providing all employees and workers at Sun a safe and healthy working environment, ensuring the company's compliance with applicable environmental regulations and  best practices and working with product design and engineering teams to ensure that Sun products will comply with all applicable laws and changing customer expectations.

Sun Microsystems has followed a dispersed model of providing the full range of EH&S services. For example, Sun's Solid Waste Management and Product Take-back and Recycling Programs are managed by the WorldWide Operations organization; efforts to improve the environmental performance of our products are carried out by product design teams and the central engineering organization (e.g. Design for the Environment Program).

Ensuring not only legal and regulatory compliance but adherence to best practices with respect to the impact of Sun's physical operations and facilities is the responsibility of Workplace Resources (under which, the EH&S function resides). The day-to-day environmental compliance and occupational health activities have been outsourced  to highly skilled partners who work alongside Sun employees and provide the company with distinct advantages through their expertise, flexibility, and skill depth.

The Corporate EHS staff is very small. This group conducts strategic projects, supports corporate efforts such as real estate development, manages the EH&S audit program and participates in public policy formulation.
