Health & Safety Programs

We believe in going beyond mere compliance with regulatory-mandated employee health & safety. We believe in creating a safe and comfortable workplace that ensures that each Sun employee has the opportunity to maximize their productivity and comfort in the workplace.

Sun's occupational health & safety programs center on the following principle areas:

  • Ergonomics
  • Injury Illness Prevention
  • Hazard Assessment and Auditing
  • Training Programs
  • Contractor Safety Program
  • Field Service Engineering Safety Program
  • Engineering Lab Safety Program

Ergonomics

Ergonomics is the relationship between human motions, postures, physical dimensions, and the tasks they perform in their work. The Sun Ergonomics Program strives to eliminate or reduce worker exposure to conditions, which can lead to cumulative trauma disorders, reduced productivity and high injury costs. Sun has placed a great deal of emphasis on establishing a flexible work environment for our employees. Workstation flexibility including your work surfaces and chair combined with your ability to choose your work location has been considered as part of Sun's overall ergonomic philosophy. The program includes:

  • Work site evaluations. We perform in person evaluations at certain Sun campuses and remotely at all other sites.
  • Injury prevention resources including on line ergonomic training and resources.
  • Ergonomic equipment and furniture recommendations for employees working at Sun sites as well as those working from home.

Injury Illness Prevention

The health and safety of all employees is of primary importance to Sun and is the driving force behind the Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Success of this program requires Sun employees, managers, and the EHS department to work together to provide a safe working environment.

Employees and managers have a responsibility to:

  • Look for injury prevention opportunities
  • Report accidents or near misses
  • Participate in accident investigations to help identify and correct the underlying hazard

Accidents are events that result in harm to a person and/or damage to property or the environment. Examples include:

  • Medical emergencies such as cutting one's hand on a machine
  • Injuring your back while lifting a computer monitor or slipping on a wet surface while at work.
  • A carpal tunnel injury caused by repeated typing and mousing

Near misses are events that could have, in slightly different circumstances, resulted in an accident. Examples include:

  • A bolt that breaks and flies past your head
  • You trip over a cable but are not injured

Hazard Assessment and Auditing

A hazard assessment is a process designed to identify hazards associated with a particular task and to develop a method to mitigate those hazards. Hazard reduction can include the need to don personal protective equipment, proper use and storage of chemicals or reducing potential electrical exposures. Hazard assessments are performed by Sun in a number of ways through our Corporate programs and service providers across the globe. In addition to performing hazard assessments, compliance audits serve as a means to identify and mitigate hazards through observation and training.

Auditing is an integral component of Sun's Corporate EHS Department. Routine EHS compliance audits, vendor audits, construction checks and other internal audit programs are designed to ensure employees, contractors and visitors at Sun facilities have a safe work environment. In addition, environmental audits are in place that assures the environment in which we work is not negatively impacted.

Training

Training is an integral part of health and safety. EHS continually evaluates training needs at Sun. On line training is provided for courses that have a widespread audience. Instructor led training courses are provided when the audience is limited to a small group with unique requirements. The intent of our health and safety training is to educate employees about the hazards they may encounter in their workplace and what they can do to reduce the risk associated with those hazards. The training also informs employees about how they can contact EHS for assistance.

Contractor Safety

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Sun) hires many companies and contractors to perform a variety of tasks at Sun sites. This program applies to contractors performing but not limited to, the following tasks;

  • Facility management
  • Facility maintenance
  • Facility equipment installation, service, maintenance and repair
  • Non-facility equipment installation, service, maintenance and repair
  • Food service
  • Environment Health and Safety
  • Construction
  • Transportation
  • Shipping and receiving
  • Security
  • Mail delivery and pick up

This procedure does not apply to contractors that perform typical office work.

The safety performance of these companies affects both their own employees and Sun employees/facilities/equipment. Sun maintains a Contractor Safety Program (CSP) to address contractor safety while at Sun facilities and Sun controlled facilities. The CSP is designed to outline Sun's expectations for contractors' EHS performance while at Sun.

Sun expects all contractors to have knowledge of, train to, and follow all applicable laws rules and regulations for the location in which they will be working. Sun may require qualified contractors to provide documentation of an active health and safety plan including training records, guidelines, hazards analysis and mitigation etc.

Field Service Engineering Safety

Sun's Field Service Engineering Safety Program is designed to prevent work related injuries and illnesses as well as comply with environmental, health and safety laws and regulations.

The term Field Service Engineers (FSE) is used as a generic term and applies to all service engineers at Sun. There are several job descriptions that fall into this group including FSE's, Customer Service Engineers (CSE), Sales Service Engineers (SSE), Customer Service Network Engineers etc. This group includes all employees that provide on-site customer support in the installation, deinstallation, relocation, modification, diagnosis and repair of Sun equipment, systems and associated peripheral equipment at the desktop, file server and data storage system level. FSE's work with basic hand and power tools, diagnostic tools, and occasionally ladders and material handling equipment such as pallet jacks. They may be required to work alone during off hours.

This program includes the hazard assessment, procedure applicability, responsibilities and training requirements for this group.
