We believe the ability to maximize a sustained impact stems from tapping into the most valuable asset that defines our business — our people. Whether it’s teaching basic IT principles to under privileged youth in Brazil, or it’s serving as a mentor to a youth delegate from the UN Global Youth Leadership Summit, Sun employees are active in sharing their skills, energy, and resources with the communities where they live and work.

Worldwide Volunteer Week '07

Sun’s 13th Annual Worldwide Volunteer Week (WWVW) mobilized more than 1,300 volunteers in 13 different countries on 27 different campuses and participated in 100 projects worldwide. During this week the Sun community joined forces to make a difference in all facets of life, working with organizations that help the environment, our troops, the elderly, homeless and hungry. While it is evident that the Sun community accomplished great things, three locations in particular stand out. They are the winners of the WWVW participation competition and will receive a US$1,000 grant from the Sun Microsystems Foundation direct to their charity.

Winners of the Participation Competition:

Team Belo Horizonte, Brazil had 67% employee participation for their blood drive.

Team Edmonton, Canada won for the 2nd year for their efforts with Habitat for Humanity, building a home for a low-income family.

Team Santiago, Chile worked with Shelter of Hope, taking children to a museum and then hosting a huge dinner at the agency.

Committed to Bridging the Gap of the Digital Divide

The Sun Foundation engages employees through a number of initiatives, one of which brings to life programs that eliminate the digital divide in the communities where we operate. Volunteerism is a core value at Sun Microsystems. We foster worldwide equal access to technology by bringing forward volunteer opportunities for our employees to invest the same talents that Sun hired them for.
