Bill MacGowan
Chief Human Resources Officer and Executive Vice President, People and Places
Sun Microsystems Inc.

As Chief Human Resources Officer and Executive Vice President of People and Places, Bill MacGowan leads the human resources, real estate and security organizations for Sun Microsystems. He and his team ensure that Sun has world class talent, and the people strategies and work environments needed to drive business results.

MacGowan has global responsibility for all human resources activities, including organization effectiveness, succession planning, leadership development, staffing, performance management, total rewards, employee communications, HR information systems, and HR service delivery to Sun's global workforce.

Building an inclusive workforce has been a priority for many years, and in 2007 MacGowan received the Diversity Best Practices Legacy award for lifetime achievements on behalf of women, minorities, and people of color in the workplace.

MacGowan's real estate organization oversees Sun's $1.2 billion real estate portfolio. This group develops and implements innovative workplace strategies, including Sun's internationally recognized Open Work program. More than half of Sun's global employee population use the Open Work program, which reduces costs to Sun and boosts employee productivity.

MacGowan joined Sun Microsystems in June 1998 to provide HR leadership to a fast growing field service team: the Enterprise Services division in Colorado. In the ensuing years, he has led groups in nearly every area of the Human Resources organization. MacGowan supported engineering business groups as HR VP for Sun's Computer Systems, Storage and Operations, then accepted leadership of Sun's corporate HR functions as the VP of Global Centers of Expertise. MacGowan was promoted to Senior VP of Human Resources in 2004, and was named to his current role as Executive VP of People and Places in 2006.

MacGowan brings to the role over 25 years of experience in leading human resources organizations. Previously, Bill was a Vice President of Human Resources for Quest Diagnostics and Corning Inc. Earlier in his career, he gained extensive HR experience, with a particular focus in compensation, at the global pharmaceuticals firm Allergan and at aerospace/defense contractor Northrop Grumman. In his personal time, MacGowan serves as a national trustee for the American Foundation for the Blind and serves on the Advisory Board for the Center for Steinbeck Studies. Bill completed his BA degree in Political Science at Claremont McKenna College.
