Mike Splain

Mike Splain was named Executive Vice President of Sun's Microelectronics Group in April of 2008. In this role Mike leads all aspects of the Microelectronics technology development and business operations. A Sun Fellow, Mike has been with Sun for 20 years and also serves as Sun's Chief Engineer and CTO for the Systems Group. Mike is a member of Sun's Executive Leadership Team as well as the Technology Management Team and Team CTO at Sun. As the chief technologist, Mike strongly influences the technology, product, and operational strategies and tactics of the Systems group. He also serves as a valuable Sun wide resource to assist in the understanding and resolution of complex technical problems. Prior to his current role, Mike has served as CTO for the Scalable Systems Group, Processor and Network Products Group and the previous Microelectronics Group. Mike has participated in the verification of validation of the SuperSPARC-I/II and UltraSPARC-I/II/III/IV microprocessors. While a member of the Scalable Systems Group he helped lead the design, validation, and debug of some of Sun's first initial server product offerings: the Sun 490, Sun 690, SS10, SC1000, and SC2000. In addition to his technical roles, Mike also held a number of management positions including head of development for the MAJC architecture and microprocessors. Mike joined Sun in 1988 as a staff engineer. Previously, he was a member of the technical staff at Ridge Computers, Vitesse Semiconductor, Encore Computer, and Digital Equipment Corporation where he served in a variety of technical positions related to the development of microprocessors and high-end computer systems. Mike holds a BS degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Connecticut.
