Sun Community Awards 2008 Winners

September 24, 2008—Meet the winners! Many of the biographies of the Sun Microsystems Community Awards 2008 winners are listed below. They come from all over the world, have a wide variety of backgrounds, but are fervently committed to freely available open source technology.

Regina Henschel was born in 1954 in Dortmund, where she lives with her husband and three children. Regina studied Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Dortmund and completed with a state board examination in 1977 when she began teaching secondary-school level courses. She became involved in OpenOffice.org in 2002 and formally joined the project a short time later.

Dominique Archambault is Associate Professor of Computer Science at Université Pierre et Marie Curie Paris 6 (UFR 919 - INOVA Team "Non Visual Interfaces and Accessibility"). Dominique has been working in the field of Assistive Technologies since 1996. He focuses on projects concerning non visual interfaces, accessibility and educational tools for blind children.

Vincent Spiewak started programming as a hobby in 1999. After receiving a Bachelor's degree in Computer Sciences, he began his work towards a Master's degree in Software Sciences & Technologies at University Pierre & Marie Curie, Paris. (TA specialty)

Martin Johansson recently finished his Master's degree in Computer Science and Engineering at Chalmers University. His research interests include low-level programming, digital design and computer security. Prior to his studies, he worked in the telecom industry. He won the OpenSPARC award.

Jiri Gaisler is the founder and CTO of Gaisler Research, a Swedish company that develops SPARC micro-processors and IP cores. He was previously a staff researcher at the European Space Agency, where he led the development of the ERC32 and LEON processors. His research interests include fault-tolerant processor design and digital design methodologies.

Mark McDermott is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in ECE Department at the University of Texas, Austin where he teaches graduate level courses in VLSI design, System-on-Chip design and Embedded Systems Architecture. His current interests include research on methodologies to improve design and verification productivity in silicon system design. He is a registered professional engineer and a member of the IEEE, ACM and TSPE.

Ullrich Hafner is the architect and lead developer of the development and tools team at Avaloq Evolution AG in Zurich, Switzerland. Ullrich received his Ph.D. in computer science in 1999; since then he is developing and designing object oriented systems in Java.

Marcelo Leal is an Operating System support analyst (UNIX-like OS). He enjoys implementing new solutions to provide Internet services, operational infrastructure, storage, and high availability systems. Areas of specialty include: XML/CSS, HTML, C, PERL, TCL, and PHP.

Stephen Colebourne is a Java Champion employed as a hands-on Technical Architect at SITA ATS Ltd, where he oversees the development of e-commerce systems for airlines. He has been developing in Java since version 1.0 and has both client and server side experience. In his spare time he is co-spec lead of JSR-310 Date and Time API and a contributer to debates on the future of the JCP. He is project lead of Joda-Time, co-author of FCM closures and founder of the Kijaro project, where language change ideas can be implemented in javac. He is a regular conference speaker, frequent blogger and member of the Apache Software Foundation."

Shampavman Chengeri lives in Bangalore,India and is a Sun Student Campus Ambassador. Shampavman is in his final year of University (JSSATE) pursuing an Information Science engineering degree. He is an active member of Bangalore OpenSolaris Users Group (BOSUG). RAM based boot for Belenix 0.7 was my summer project to get better acquainted with OpenSolaris.

Anuradha Gunasekara is a software engineer living in Colomobo, Sri Lanka. He is a specialist in the Java programming language and Development Tools. His interests include developing open-source software, particularly Development Tools. He's been a member of NetBeans Dream Term since Jul 2008.

Caoyuan (Hong Wei) Deng is an independent software developer from China now living in Vancouver B.C. Canada. With nearly 2 decades' experience in the software industry, he is a specialist in C/C++, Java, Erlang, Scala programming languages and as an architect in Web and enterprise application. His interest is developing open-source software for financial marketinganalysis with Artificial Intelligent technology. He's been a member of NetBeans Dream Term since July 2008.

Clemens Eisserer was born 1985 in Linz Austria. He studied electronic/informatics at "HTL-Steyr" and received his general qualification for University entrance. After finishing his civilian service he attends the Technical University of Vienna where he studies medical informatics.

Neal Gafter is a Java Champion, co-author of the book Java Puzzlers, language geek, and developer of the language changes in Java 1.4 through 1.5. Neal continues his work with the development of closures for Java.

Ricardo Ayres Severo is a Computer Science student at the University of Santa Cruz do Sul, Brazil and is a Sun Campus Ambassador. Ricardo is the Solaris system administrator for the Department of Informatics at the University of Santa Cruz do Sul.

Sanjiv Bhatia received his Ph.D. in 1991 from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science at the University of Missouri in St. Louis. His areas of research include Computer Graphics, Image Databases, Digital Image Processing, and Computer Vision. He has been involved in open source and high performance computing projects for the past several years and is a member of ACM, Siggraph, and AAAI.

Michael Nascimento Santos is a seasoned developer with more than 9 years of experience with the Java platform, from J2ME to J2EE, and over 15 years of practical programming experience. He is a Java Champion, the java.net Community Manager for the JSR Community and a java.net blogger. Michael also helps to run SouJava, one of the largest JUGs in the world and collaborates with many open-source projects, such as Thinlet, AspectWerkz and genesis. He has spoken at many Java-related events, such as JavaOne JustJava, Abaporu, FISL, COMDEX Brasil, BrasilOne and Conexao Java.

During the last year, he has co-lead JSR-310 (Date & Time API) and served as an expert at JSR-296 (Swing Application Framework) and JSR-303 (Bean Validation). In previous years, Michael has also served as expert at JSR-207 (PD4J), JSR-250 (Common Annotations) and JSR-270 (Mustang/Java 6) and contributed feedback to many other JSRs.

Roman Kennke is an enthusiast programmer and enjoys solving all kinds of problems, not only computer related. He is involved in several Free Software projects, GNU Classpath, Escher and of course OpenJDK. During the day Roman is a Software Engineer at aicas realtime http://www.aicas.com and is responsible for graphics and VM programming, OpenJDK and GNU Classpath integration and communication with those communities. He is a music lover, both in listening to and playing music -- guitar and singing.

Mario Torre is a software hacker and musician, for fun and because it makes him feel free. Mario likes to hack on GNU Classpath and OpenJDK and to be in touch with the Community. "Of course, I use Linux and I aim for World Domination. But when I'll get this, I'll simply throw it all away and start all over again. I am an incurable romantic."
