NetBeans Community Award Winner Q&A

Lorent Foret

Name: Lorent Forêt
Project: IvyBeans
Winner: Silver Medal

  1. Can you briefly describe your project and explain how it will benefit the NetBeans community?

This was exactly what I wanted to do with IvyBeans. I agree with a comment Wade Chandler made, "It/ /really simplifies the task of piecing together an application from existing library repositories." Indeed, IvyBeans provide a full Apache Ivy integration into the library management feature of the NetBeans IDE. That means, directly from NetBeans you have access to a dependency manager like Ivy, which helps you manage the dependencies between your projects and third party libraries, especially open source libraries.

  2. Is this your first time participating in a contest like NetBeans Innovators Grant?

Yes, it is the first time I participate in such contest. I always have plenty development ideas. Some are bad, some are good. The grant helps me to focus on one single development with the will of having the clearest code and the best functionality. I am ready for the next one!

  3. How are you satisfied with the organization of the contest?

Yes, very satisfied. All information needed was given on time and the process to give feed back about the status of our projects was clear and simple. Furthermore, every conversations on the mailing list was very kind and useful.

  4. What were your feelings when you first heard about winning the Gold/Silver Award?

I was surprised and it is the icing on the cake ("cerise sur le gâteau"). Indeed, the concurrency was hard some projects were big and ambitious, (thinking about Scala support, Cube°n, Java FX and others ...). That's why I am very pleased and touched to learn that IvyBeans has won the silver medal. That means for me that the work done on this project was appreciated and bring something new to the NetBeans community.

  5. Can you tell us which version of the NetBeans IDE you used for developing your project and what was your experience with NetBeans in terms of quality or productivity?

I began my development with the 6.1 version and finished the grant release (I still continue to work on IvyBeans, for an 1.1 release soon) with the 6.5 beta. In terms of quality and productivity, I am an old date NetBeans user and as usual, major releases and even beta version are stable enough to work with in good condition. Each release brings more and more new things, so I never hesitate to works with Milestone and Beta releases.

  6. If it's not secret how do you plan to use the grant money?

No, it's not a secret. First of all, I shared the prize with Xavier Hanin co-developer of this plugin and Ivy's creator.

I also put some fresh air in my bank account. My project to travel in India soon, will be more comfortable than previewed. And finally I will try to keep some money to buy some geek's stuff a new PC by example.

  7. Apart from the financial profit, do you personally see any other benefit from participating in the NetBeans Innovators Grant?

It was a great experience, we had to create from scratch an open source project with the challenge to finish it in short time. To achieve, we had to identify all difficulties very soon in the project. It remembers me the ambiance of my old student projects. It was refreshing.
