NetBeans Community Award Winner Q&A
Award: Silver Award winner
Project Title: PL/SQL Editor
Developer: Alexandre Soumbatov
Location: Berlin, Germany
- Can you briefly describe your project and explain how it will benefit the NetBeans community?
The aim of PL/SQL Editor is to provide a convenient way to work with Oracle functions, procedures, packages, types and triggers inside NetBeans IDE. My project adds support for creating, editing, compiling and dropping Oracle PL/SQL objects right inside the NetBeans IDE, including syntax highlighting, code folding, navigation and indentation.
The PL/SQL Editor is the first step in the integration process of Oracle development into NetBeans IDE. Currently, only Oracle's JDeveloper offers fully integrated Java and PL/SQL development in one product.
Because NetBeans is not only limited on Java language development supplementing PL/SQL will give a lot of benefits not only for IDE but for the Platform as well. I hope this will result in increasing NetBeans popularity with Oracle developers.
- Is this your first time participating in a contest like NetBeans Innovators Grant?
Yes, it's my first time. I have never participated in something similar before.
- How are you satisfied with the organization of the contest?
Since Jiri Kovalsky has taken over the grant coordinator role it has
been very well organized. So I would like to thank Jiri for his nice work.
- What were your feelings when you first heard about winning the Gold/Silver Award?
I was absolutely happy of course! It's a great honour for my work.
- Can you tell us which version of the NetBeans IDE you used for developing your project and what was your experience with NetBeans in terms of quality or productivity?
The project development was done inside NetBeans 6.1 Development Build
200804180003. My first experience with NetBeans was with version 5.5 and
since that time I can admit that stability and usability of the IDE was
increased. And of course, every new release of NetBeans IDE brings many
new useful features.
- If it's not secret how do you plan to use the grant money?
Still no concrete ideas, but with three small kid's this will be not a
big problem :-)
- Apart from the financial profit, do you personally see any other benefit from participating in the NetBeans Innovators Grant?
It was the unique experience to be involved in NetBeans development. For
me, it was a question how well I can organize my work to be on time with
my project. Because I previously had no NetBeans Platform development
experience it was also a big challenge for myself. And of course, it was
a bit of self-promotional as well!
