November 17, 2008 -- StarOffice 9 and the corresponding Asian-language StarSuite 9, is now available. This major update to Sun's popular office productivity suite is open source, natively supports Mac OS X, and delivers new versions of its word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and drawing software. StarOffice 9 is an affordable office suite that is easy to use with StarOffice files, Microsoft Office files, and PDF documents.

Open Source Software with Support
Sun is committed to providing open source software across all areas of IT, and that now includes office productivity software. StarOffice 9 is open source with the same binaries that are in OpenOffice.org 3.0, and it is fully supported by Sun. Customers can choose between standard and premium support options, which include 24/7 help desk assistance.
Pricing and Availability
StarOffice 9 and StarSuite 9 are available now via a new subscription model that includes license and support for either one-year or three-year terms. Enterprise volume pricing starts at $25 per user, or you can download it now for $34.95.

Inside StarOffice 9
The latest release of Sun's productivity suite has several new features, including advanced, extensible productivity tools for users. StarOffice 9 includes Mozilla's Thunderbird e-mail client and Lightening extension for calendaring. Additional extensions make it easier for users to edit and import PDF files and create reports as well as work online--they can even publish wikis and blogs.
StarOffice productivity tool highlights include:
- Writer now allows for multiple page editing
- Calc has an optimization solver tool
- Impress has native table support
- Draw can effectively handle poster-size drawings.
In addition, StarOffice 9 seamlessly supports several file formats, including its native, ISO-standard Open Document Format (ODF), Microsoft Office Open XML files (as well as legacy documents), and Microsoft Access 2007 files.
