OpenSolaris 2008.11 Released

December 10, 2008 -- Today Sun and the global OpenSolaris community announced OpenSolaris 2008.11 the newest version of the company's open source operating system. It includes new features and enhancements that benefit users, administrators, and developers, and delivers a powerful, open platform for datacenters that require high performance and flexibility.

OpenSolaris 2008.11 add several key new features, including interface, installation, management, and usability enhancements that make day-to-day tasks easier than ever.

New for Users

Time Slider
Leverage the power of the ZFS file system to automatically take snapshots of your files at regular intervals, and then use the graphical Time Slider to browse changes over time and recover as needed.

New Print Manager
The new print manager includes several useful features, including automatic detection of locally attached USB printers.

New Repositories
Four new repositories offer greater community contribution and access to more Sun and third-party technologies.

OpenSolaris 2008.11 lessens the burdens of administrators with new management, storage, and installation capabilities.


New for Administrators

COMSTAR Storage Framework
The first phase of Project COMSTAR allows you to convert the OpenSolaris system into a SCSI target device that can be accessed over a storage network.

Automated Installation Prototype
Now you can choose which packages to include within the installation web service, allowing clients to easily connect and install different profiles.


New for Developers

Distribution Constructor
The distribution constructor is a command-line tool for building custom bootable ISO and USB images from a collection of software and settings available on OpenSolaris.

Improved Web Stack
OpenSolaris provides a high-performance, highly reliable platform for MySQL, Apache, and Glassfish deployments, with dynamic language support for PHP, Ruby, and other development platforms.

New OpenSolaris Subscription Options

Sun also extended OpenSolaris subscription options to meet the growing needs of customers who are deploying open source solutions. Customers wanting to run OpenSolaris as their OS of choice now have two affordable subscription support plans from Sun - production and essentials depending on their technology and business needs.


OpenSolaris Partnerships

"OpenSolaris is the open platform for the future," says John Fowler, Sun EVP, Systems. "It has already been deployed on hundreds of thousands of laptops and servers and is supported on more than a thousand different systems." Several new and expanded partnerships will support the continued growth of OpenSolaris.

Toshiba

Sun and Toshiba today announced a strategic relationship to deliver the OpenSolaris operating system pre-installed on several Toshiba laptops in early 2009.

Intel

OpenSolaris 2008.11 takes advantage of current generation Intel® Xeon® processors and the next generation Intel Core microarchitecture (codenamed Nehalem). This OS release will be optimized for the next generation Intel Core microarchitecture. A few highlights of the enhanced OS further enables support for improved overall system performance by taking advantage of Intel Quick Path Interconnect, better scalability with Intel® Hyper-Threading technology and virtualization with support for Intel Virtualization Technology

AMD

Sun and AMD are collaborating to take advantage of the latest AMD Opteron processor technology. The OpenSolaris community provides AMD the opportunity to directly add support for its new Shanghai processor features as they become available, and provides immediate access to the source OS for improved tuning of processor performance.
