The U.S. federal Government is using Sun's open source technologies to build a secure, open platform connecting over 20 federal government agencies with private healthcare organizations. The Nationwide Health Information Network is a "network of networks" that demonstrates the speed with which a cost-effective, scalable, interoperable, collaborative solution can be built for the healthcare industry.
CONNECTing to the Nationwide Health Information Network
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) built the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) to connect 26 federal agencies with private sector healthcare organizations, enabling them to securely exchange health information over the Internet. But each office uses different operating systems, so to ensure compatibility in this heterogeneous environment HHS is building gateway software with Sun's open source applications.
CONNECT uses Sun's GlassFish open source application platform technology, the Java Composite Application Platform Suite (Java CAPS), and the Sun Java Identity Management Suite. The government's goal for the NHIN and CONNECT is to create a place for the healthcare industry to build innovative, interoperable solutions.
