Sun's CEO, Jonathan Schwartz Addresses Sun's Twenty Five Years

Sun lives by the motto, "a rising tide lifts all boats." For 25 years we've recognized that open, standards-based technologies create market opportunity for ourselves as well as our customers, partners and the communities in which we participate. For 25 years our actions and innovations foretold a world where the network is the computer. And I find it simply staggering how real that vision has become.

Twelve million people a week join the Internet, most through a myriad of low-cost consumer devices. And yet this still leaves 75% of the planet on the wrong side of the divide. We're changing that. As we at Sun, together with our partners, drive ever more participation on the network, it will continue its development as more than a technology, but also as a social and economic utility.

This utility may well become the most important technology of the next 100 years. It will expand economic opportunity. It will drive political progress. It will change the way we deliver new educational, government, business, banking, and health care services. The network connects communities, countries and continents, and we have a unique opportunity -- and an obligation -- to shape its development responsibly.

We are blessed to have this opportunity to contribute. Founded on the ideals of openness and sharing, we are a company with a history of innovation and creativity that everyday can deliver value to shareholders, while enhancing society.

But we certainly won't be doing this alone.

First, a thank you to our customers and partners, some of whom have been with us since the beginning. They have been at the front lines, delivering services to consumers built on our technologies. I'd also like to recognize the worldwide community of developers, both inside and outside of Sun. We'd be nothing without you.

And most importantly, my deep appreciation goes to the employees at Sun Microsystems today, and those who have contributed over the past 25 years. We are a company built on people and people's ideas. You've helped define how the world works today and how the world will work tomorrow.

I couldn't be prouder of our first 25 years, and I can't wait to see where the next 25 will take us.
