Blossoming Business

Sun/AT&T alliance helps 1-800-FLOWERS.COM expand its online business.

"We made the decision to share with Sun and AT&T what we wanted to do, and asked them to step up to the plate and deliver a solution that would solve our current business needs and help us grow. And that's what they've done. It was a great decision on our part. Sun and AT&T have an excellent relationship with each other and a strong relationship with us. It's an alliance that we expect to grow with us in the years ahead."

The powers behind the transformation.

It was more than just a name change. When 1-800-FLOWERS became 1-800-FLOWERS.COM a few years ago, it heralded the beginning of a major expansion —from a company specializing in flower sales into a diversified, 24-hour, multi-brand business with B2B and B2C operations and multi-channel access to services.

The transformation has been extremely successful. Today, fully half of the business of 1-800-FLOWERS.COM is non-floral. The company now offers a broad range of plants, gourmet foods, candies, toys, garden merchandise, and gift baskets. And its online business is in full bloom. As recently as four years ago, online sales accounted for only 10 percent of the company's business. Today online orders comprise about half of the company's revenue.

Behind the scenes, two companies with a long history of working together and a track record of success with 1-800-FLOWERS.COM were instrumental in the metamorphosis: AT&T and Sun Microsystems. With combined expertise in mission-critical systems, reliable online transaction processing infrastructure, and managed hosting services, AT&T and Sun put together an integrated solution that enabled 1-800-FLOWERS.COM to make the move to online business with speed and confidence.
