Did you know...
-
In May 2004, Sun introduced the Network Systems Group (NSG). This new
division, headed by John Fowler, executive vice president, is tasked with
driving innovation and development for Sun's volume systems and
workstations, and bringing enterprise-class experience to the commodity
computing/x86 space.
Did you know...
- Sun's NSG is challenging the competition and delivering customer value by
offering one of the fastest, most complete line of high-performance,
industry-standard, AMD Opteron(TM) processor-based Solaris systems that give
customers the choice of running multiple operating systems (OS), including
the Solaris OS, Windows OS with Microsoft Hardware Compatibility (HCL)
certifications, as well as SUSE Linux or Red Hat Linux.
Did you know...
- Sun offers a growing range of x86-based hardware products priced to
compete fiercely with similar products from other vendors, including HP and
IBM. Sun's AMD Opteron processor-based systems include:
- Sun Fire(TM) V40z server
- Sun Fire V20z server
- Sun Java(TM)Workstation W1100z
- Sun Java Workstation W2100z

- The NSG is providing alternative sales models ranging from
subscription-based pricing to offering systems for auction on eBay - where
customers set the price for these high-performing systems.

- Thousands of Sun systems, including the Sun Fire V20z and Sun Fire V40z
servers, the Sun Java Workstation W1100z and the Sun Java Workstation
W2100z have already shipped to notable customers including:
- The Department of Energy's Idaho National Engineering and Environmental
Laboratory (INEEL), who is developing a high performance computer cluster
with a solution that uses 280 Sun Fire V20z servers, Solaris 9 OS, JES and
Java development software. They chose the solution for the N1 grid
containers that Solaris 10 will provide.
- Xerox Corporation, who evaluated and purchased the new Sun Java
Workstation W1100z because of the tremendous performance gains it saw with
the new AMD Opteron processor-based systems.
- University of California, San Diego, who uses the Sun Java
Workstations, NVIDIA Quadro FX graphics and partner technologies to power
Biomedical research.
Did you know...
- The Sun Fire V40z server outperforms comparable servers from IBM and HP.

- Sun's Java Workstation W1100z and Sun Java Workstation W2100z achieved up
to 61 percent faster performance running the Solaris x86 OS, compared to
the Dell 650 Precision Xeon-based workstation running Red Hat Linux,
according to the BLAST benchmark. This benchmark can be found at:

Did you know...
- Sun and AMD conduct joint development on AMD's Opteron processors. As
AMD's strategic partner, Sun is in a unique position to support AMD 64 dual-core
technology with hardware and software products.
