Sun Strengthens SAN Portfolio with New Offering for SME Market
Monday, March 21, 10:30 AM PT
Today Sun expanded its existing storage area
network (SAN) portfolio by providing new options
for small and mid-size enterprise (SME)
customers looking to reap the numerous benefits
of SANs.
Sun's move to broaden its footprint in the SAN
market is the result of a strengthened alliance
with QLogic Corp., in an effort to provide
customers with more choice and flexibility at
the best prices.
Sun has qualified QLogic's SANbox® 5200 Fibre
Channel stackable switches, and added the
SANblade® QLA®210 value line of host bus
adapters (HBAs) to the Sun StorEdge(TM) family
of storage solutions. Combined with Sun storage
arrays and servers for x64 platforms running the
Solaris(TM) 10 operating system, the most
SAN-optimized OS in the industry, these new
additions will be offered as the latest option
in Sun's portfolio of SAN solutions for
enterprises of all sizes.
"Sun provides a broad choice of flexible SAN
solutions and services at very competitive
prices, and this next step in our relationship
with QLogic strengthens our storage and data
management portfolio for small and mid-size
customers, tackling issues like consolidation,
compliance and continuity," said James
Whitemore, vice president of marketing for
Network Storage, Sun Microsystems. "QLogic's
easy-to-use, pay-as-you-grow network storage
products are a great fit for Sun's comprehensive
family of open, scalable storage systems that,
with the unequaled functionality of Solaris 10,
help customers manage data throughout its
lifecycle."
The QLogic SANbox 5200 switch uses a
revolutionary new stacking technology that
removes the need to set aside ports for
inter-switch links, which could otherwise be
used to connect to servers or storage. This
innovative design allows SME customers to 'pay
as they grow' by starting with an eight-port
configuration and scaling up to the enterprise
range with 64 true-user ports. Branded as the
Sun Fibre Channel HBA , the SANblade QLA210
Fibre Channel HBA is currently qualified with
StorEdge(TM) 3510 and 3511 arrays and Sun
Fire(TM) V20 and V40z servers. The SANbox 5200
is qualified with StorEdge 3500, StorEdge 6000
and StorEdge 9000 series arrays.
