Sun Studio 8 Ships; Java.net Launches New Java Community

Sun demonstrates its ongoing worldwide support for all types of developers, from individual to enterprise developers, as it announces that the Sun Studio 8 IDE is now shipping and launches a new java.net community for Industrial Java developers.

Sun Studio 8 is Now Available

The Sun Studio 8 suite is the latest release of the powerful and easy-to-use IDE for C, C++ and Fortran developers creating applications for the Solaris SPARC and x86 Operating Systems. This suite of tools for developing enterprise applications includes features that focus on optimizing application performance and an improved performance analyzer - which helps developers identify performance obstacles in their Java technology, C, C++ or Fortran code - and a debugger for applications that use both Java technology and native code. For more information, visit sun.com/developers.

"At Reuters, one of our top priorities is driving greater performance and agility with each release of our Solaris OS-based applications," said Casey Merkey, Alliance Manager, Enterprise Information Products, Reuters. "Our investigations have shown that the compilers in Sun Studio 8 offer significant runtime performance gains, and we have adopted Sun Studio 8 for the development of the Solaris OS version of the Reuters Market Data System."

New Java Studio Partner

In more tools news, Accurev announced this week that the company has joined Sun's Java Studio Partner program and that the integration of AccuRev/CM and Sun Java Studio Standard 5 update 1 is now available for download from www.accurev.com. Java Studio Standard is a powerful and intuitive IDE for Java. Based on the NetBeans open source tools development platform, Java Studio provides a comprehensive set of features and functionality which enables the development of applications ranging from desktop to standards-based enterprise class applications and Web services.

java.net for Industrial Java - Community-Based Collaboration

This is the first open source forum dedicated to the development of Java APIs and libraries for the burgeoning area of wide-area distributed sensors and controls.

Building on the standards created by the Java Community Process, the Java Distributed Data Acquisition and Control (JDDAC) java.net open source community signals the broadening interest in and deployment of Java infrastructure into the areas of industrial control, building automation, industrial security, utilities management, robotics and distributed sensors and control networks. JDDAC will be creating the first Java implementations of key IEEE standards for distributed sensors and controls including the 1451 and 1588 standards backed by NIST. Agilent Laboratories, as the first of the founding board members, signal their commitment to Java as a key technology for building distributed data sensor and control networks. For further information, please visit, community.java.net/jddac.

java.net is a popular Web site used by the developer community that expands the Java technology portfolio of applications tools and services in applied areas of technology and vertical industry solutions. More than 39,000 developers worldwide have joined the java.net collaborative community and are engaged in almost 800 projects ranging from Java technology-based games development to desktop technologies to enterprise development such as Java Web services.

Developers can also prepare for exciting new Java technologies at the upcoming JavaOne 2004 Conference, the world's largest Java developer gathering, scheduled for the week of June 28, 2004. Registration information is available at java.sun.com/javaone.
