Q & A
John Fowler, Executive Vice President, Network Systems
Tuesday, May 18, 1:00 PM PT
Q. What's Sun's vision for Network Systems?
A. Network Systems is focused on leveraging industry standards to create new value
points for systems in a broad range of applications across Solaris, Linux and
Windows. NSG will complement Sun's current system product line by broadening the
appeal to leading edge horizontal and network computing architectures.
Q. What is Network Systems responsible for?
A. This new group is designed to strengthen Sun's position in the market for
industry standard network computing infrastructure. The Network Systems product
line plans to leverage industry standard components, supply chains, and Sun's
research and development to deliver the best price/performance, technically
advanced solutions to customers leveraging the x86 instruction set.
Q. What are your priorities for Network Systems?
A. The group has several priorities, including: fill out the product line to
contain a broad family; give customers some pleasant surprises with new
price-performance points and category changing products; and try new business
and support models to redefine the marketspace for volume industry standard servers.
Q. What can customers expect from Sun/Network Systems?
A. Customers can expect great values in price/performance combined with Sun's
software portfolio, aimed at leading edge customers. There will be plenty of new
things for customers to work with. We plan to experiment and take some risks,
and look forward to the customer feedback.
Q. What market opportunities do you see for your group?
A. NSG products will be broadly applicable in the multi-billion dollar systems
market. Although we will be focused on leading edge offerings, the products
will deliver great customer value. Sun's unique ability to combine hardware and
software service offerings including Solaris, Java ES, and N1 is unmatched by
competitors.
Q. What matters to you?
A. One of the things that computing industry has demonstrated repeatedly over the
past 25 years is that open, standards based systems design principles built into
great products always wins. Sun's historical roots comes from just those
concepts, building and integrating technology in a way that resulted in great
products. NSG will follow this same path that Scott McNealy and Andy
Bechtolsheim used in starting Sun -- a combination of invention, leverage,
architecture, and innovation to match the technology needs of the current
application architectures.
