Sun Microsystems Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Sun Pranks From the Past

The April Fools prank has become a time-honored tradition at Sun. Below are just some of the highlights from the past 25 years...

1986
In 1986, Sun pranksters reassembled a fully functional VW Beetle inside the office of VP of Product Development Eric Schmidt.
1987
In 1987, Sun pranksters floated VP of Research Bill Joy's brand new Ferrari in a landscape pond, providing only a rubber raft, life preserver and paddle for him to retrieve the car.
1988
In 1988, Sun pranksters removed the walls between President and CEO Scott McNealy's office and the office of EVP Bernie Lacroute. They installed a complete one-hole, par four golf course, including a tee area, sand traps, water hazard with cherub fountain, golf carts, ball washer and bench.
1990
In 1990, Sun pranksters brought to life one of President and CEO Scott McNealy's favorite quotes: "All the wood behind one arrowhead." They constructed a 60-foot arrow extending through his administrator's office, through his office, through his 5th floor window and 12 feet out over the front entrance of the building.
1991
In 1991, Sun pranksters relocated VP of Sun Labs Wayne Rosing's office to the Fish Roundabout in the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The office was equipped with a desk, table, filing cabinets, SHARKstation 1 computer, pictures of Wayne's wife and kids, a 300-pound sea bass, a couple of sharks and hundreds of salmon.
1993
In 1993, Sun pranksters targeted Sun co-founder and SMCC Chief Technologist Andy Bechtolsheim: they submerged a partial office in a fresh-water tank complete with Bala sharks; put the aquarium in Andy's Porshe; put the Porshe on a miniature golf course; and put the golf course in his office. This prank paid tribute to pranks of years past: "office in pond" (1985); "car in office" (1986); "car in pond" (1987); "golf course in office (1988).
2000
In 2000, Sun pranksters converted Sun Labs VP Jim Mitchell's office into a mountain climbers paradise, complete with waterfall, giant boulders, tree stumps (doubling as office table and chairs), reptiles and a floor-to-ceiling climbing wall.
2005
In 2005, Sun pranksters put a twist on the popular "car in office" prank and parked a SmartCar outside the office of Sun Labs Director Glenn Edens.
