3, SUN AND POPWIRE TAKE 3G CUSTOMERS INTO THE SWEDISH BIG BROTHER HOUSE

For the first time Endemol's hit reality series - Big Brother - is streamed live to 3G video mobile phones by mobile operator 3 in Sweden

Cannes, France - February 23rd, 2004 - Swedish fans of the hit reality TV show Big Brother can, for the first time, keep watch on the Big Brother housemates 24x7 with 3's videomobile service. Using Sun Microsystems(tm) and Popwire technology solutions, 3 is delivering to its subscribers live video streams from inside the Big Brother house, ensuring dedicated fans do not miss one second of the action.

Since late January 2004, Hutchison and Investor AB's Swedish 3G mobile operator - 3 - in cooperation with Swedish broadcaster Kanal 5 have offered 3's subscribers access to live streaming video direct to their cellular phones from right inside the Big Brother house. The service runs for 100 days, the duration of this series of Big Brother - Sweden.

Erik Hšrnfeldt - Editor in Chief, 3, commented: "Big Brother has been a great success for us. We have sold nearly 60 000 live-stream sessions in just over two weeks, with the two "Director's Cut" feeds proving the most popular - running at approximately two minutes per session. It is exciting to be the one to break new ground and do something that has never been done before in the mobile world. Being first to market with video services over 3G has given us a unique offering to our customers that nobody else can match. The immediacy of the videomobile is the optimal way to reach this type of audience. Fans are constantly stopping by our stores to see what's happening in Big Brother!"

Elie Simon, President, Sun Microsystems EMEA, commented: "3 has produced a commercially viable, revenue producing event that increases user satisfaction and increases the average-revenue-per-user (ARPU) of 3's subscriber base. Streaming video has been an alluring goal for operators in search of revenue and listener loyalty since the industry started the 3G build-out several years ago. This successful deployment shows how live content and advanced, scalable infrastructure can work together to deliver a great result. We are delighted that Sun's Professional Services, software solutions, infrastructure and partners, such as Popwire, have made this goal a reality for 3."

Robert Ekstršm, CEO at Popwire Technology, concluded, "We are very excited to have teamed up with Sun and 3 to make this new, innovative, service possible. It is clear that our combined solutions enables operators today to take advantage of the features and promises of 3G."

The Big Brother steaming media event is powered by the Sun Java(tm) System Streaming Server and Popwire's Live Engine LX, a high-end 3GPP real-time, live encoder specifically designed for the Telecommunications industry. This live event is a 7x24 multicast, streamed according to the 3GPP specification, using MPEG-4 and AMR-NB formats. It demonstrates that operators can create new, live premium wireless services and exceed subscriber expectations with the increased capabilities of the 3G network infrastructure.

The Sun Java System Streaming Server 2.1 is a high-performance, open-standards based, industrial grade multimedia streaming server for IP-based networks, including those of the 3G wireless operators. It supports the MPEG-4, QuickTime and 3GPP streaming services file formats and real-time streaming protocols. Sun Java System Streaming Server is highly-scalable, both vertically and horizontally, allowing customers to stream synchronized video and audio, providing Video-on-Demand (VoD) and live content experiences.

The Popwire Live Engine LX is fully 3GPP compliant and supports all 3GPP streaming services-enabled mobile handsets on the market today.
