Technologies, Innovations
- Advanced system design: The new Sun Fire[TM] servers share a common system architecture and have common, interchangeable components - from system boards to power supplies. This approach gives customers the ability to redistribute capacity across different servers for flexible and efficient utilization of resources. First applied in the Sun Enterprise servers, this design innovation is still unmatched in the industry.
- Simple upgrades: The systems share the same boards so customers can upgrade to a larger system while preserving existing investments by simply moving all major components to a larger Sun Fire chassis
- Mixed-speed CPU support: Add the latest CPUs without the need to replace or upgrade every CPU in the system - which customers must do when upgrading HP's Superdome or IBM's p680
- Industry-standard PCI and cPCI technology - cPCI technology enables customers to "hot swap" off the shelf I/O cards including; Quad FastEthernet, FastEthernet+SCSI, ATM 155 and ATM 622 interface cards -- a capability not found in systems from HP or IBM.
Flexible Acquisition Options
- Capacity on Demand (COD): Enables customers to purchase servers at a low initial cost and then pay for additional processing resources on an as-needed basis; allows instantaneous response to unpredictable user demand peaks with in-system access to additional processors. When used in conjunction with the servers' unique Dynamic Reconfiguration capability, new COD processors can be activated without having to physically open the box and reboot the system.
- Aggressive upgrade program gives customers two times the previous allotted credit for systems purchased within the last year.
