Open Work

Our Planet

Open Work is for Everyone

Open Work is the Way We Work at Sun.

Open Work is for our Planet

Our distributed work environment enables us to cut our carbon emissions by reducing energy use from employees working in our facilities and decreasing our real estate holdings. In 2007, the award-winning Open Work platform prevented 29,000 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

Other impressive environmental and socioeconomic impacts of Open Work include:

  • Energy savings: A recent Sun study showed that the energy saved by an employee who works from home just 2.1 days per week equaled 5,400 Kilowatt hours (Kwh) per year. (The average home uses 1,000 KWh per month in energy.) In addition, approximately 2,600 flexible and home assigned employees have a Sun Ray at home, which draws only 4 watts of electricity — as much as the average night light. (Open Work Energy Measurement Project, Sun Microsystems, April 2008)
  • Reduced traffic congestion.
  • Less stress on urban transportation infrastructure.
  • The ability for Sun employees to form closer bonds within their communities — volunteering, mentoring, and contributing locally.
