Public Policy at Sun

Policy makers and technologists share a common goal -- to improve people's lives. Companies like Sun are actively engaged in finding solutions to pressing issues ranging from global warming, waste reduction, innovation and competitiveness to international trade, technology policy, open government, and transparency for investors. The decisions we make -- technologists and policy makers, alike -- have a profound impact on the lives of millions of citizens the world over.

We believe the network holds the answers.

Sun believes everyone, everywhere should have access to the network. This will only become a reality if we can truly eliminate the barriers to access. And it's why our technical, business and policy teams are so focused on open, standards-based technologies.

Sun is built on the principles of openness and transparency. We stand behind that heritage as the largest commercial contributor of open source software on earth. And it's not because Sun's a charity, but because it's good for our business too. More people participating on the network drives its development as more than a technology, but as utility -- both social and economic.

This network utility will expand economic opportunity. It will drive political progress. It will change the way we deliver new educational, government, business, banking, and health care services. The network connects communities, countries and continents, and we have a unique opportunity -- and an obligation -- to shape its development responsibly.

Governments around the world also owe it to their citizens. We, at Sun, want to partner with the world's policy makers on driving the Internet's value and utility, as well as the promise of open standards and open source. It's our responsibility to shape the debate and help our governments make well-informed decisions. We're also actively involved in driving eco-standards. To ensure greater network participation doesn't leave a lasting impact on our environment.

So I encourage anyone interested in technology and public policy to use this site to find out where Sun stands on the important topics such as open source, open document format (ODF), sustainable computing and the environment. We hope you'll join our efforts.

Thank you,
